Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Elevation: 1,870m to 2,720m
Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Activities:Register at Marangu Gate and begin your trek through lush rainforest.
Look for blue monkeys and colorful birds.
Overnight in Mandara Hut (wooden cabins with beds).
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Elevation: 2,720m to 3,720m
Distance: 12 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Heath/Moorland
Activities:Exit rainforest and enter moorland zone.
Enjoy clear views of Mawenzi Peak.
Arrive at Horombo Hut for rest and overnight.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (Highly Recommended)
Elevation: 3,720m
Activities:
Optional hike to Mawenzi Ridge or Zebra Rocks (up to 4,100m).
This day helps your body adjust to altitude.
Return to Horombo for a second night.
💡 Note: Some itineraries skip this day and make it a 5-day trek — but we recommend the 6-day version for higher success.
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Elevation: 3,720m to 4,700m
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Activities:Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
Sparse vegetation, colder temperatures.
Arrive at Kibo Hut, have an early dinner, and rest.
Prepare for midnight summit attempt.
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m (Uhuru), then down to 3,720m
Distance: 6 km up / 15 km down
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours total
Habitat: Arctic (at summit), then moorland
Activities:Begin summit at midnight with headlamps.
Pass Gilman’s Point (5,685m) and Stella Point (5,756m).
Reach Uhuru Peak – the Roof of Africa!
Celebrate, then descend all the way back to Horombo Hut.
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Elevation: 3,720m to 1,870m
Distance: 20 km
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland and rainforest
Activities:Final trek through rainforest.
Receive summit certificates at the gate.
Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha hotel.
Accommodation:
Huts instead of tents (bunk beds with mattresses)
Basic but comfortable with shared dining and toilet facilities
